The Villa Unity Story

We built this house
to answer a question.

In March 2020 we left Bangkok for Koh Samui with two suitcases, two small daughters and a borrowed car, expecting to be away for six weeks. The island closed behind us, and we stayed.

Somewhere in that first lockdown we began asking what a house should have if you could never leave it. That question became the brief we handed our architect, almost word for word — and over the next five years it became Villa Unity. Six years on, we still live here.

If we have to be stuck somewhere — what would we want that place to have?

From December 2026, for the first time, the house takes guests. Never rented before, run by the family who built it.

The Samui Elephant Haven sits a 150-metre walk from the gate, with a café where you can watch the herd over coffee. Stroll over before breakfast — no day trip, no transfers.

Elephant experiences require day trips, transport, and tourist crowds. You leave the experience behind when you return to your hotel.
Full wellness floor.

Infrared sauna, steam room, cold plunge, hot tub, salon — plus fitness studio, gym, and yoga. All private, all 24 hours, no bookings.

Hotel spas charge per session, require advance booking, and run on fixed schedules. In-villa wellness is usually a plunge pool at most.
Owner-managed, not corporate.

You deal directly with the family who built it. Requests are handled personally, not through a call centre. We live on the island full-time.

Resort staff rotate. Villa management companies handle dozens of properties. Your booking is a line item, not a relationship.
Solar-powered resilience.

A full solar array with battery backup keeps Villa Unity running through Samui’s occasional outages — air-con, WiFi and lighting uninterrupted.

Island power cuts affect most properties. Hotels run diesel generators (noisy, polluting). Most villas have no backup at all.

Why Unity

Three things that
explain the house.

A spa floor, because the gyms were shut. A fifteen-metre pool, because our eldest daughter spent that lockdown living in water. Five levels, so ten guests never feel like ten guests.

The 2020 briefThe question that designed the house

The rock excavated to seat the house was never carted away. It was hand-chiselled, piece by piece, into the planter boxes and the walls of the massage and entertainment rooms. The house is partly built from the hill it displaced.

We bought this land partly because of the elephants next door. Because of the sanctuary, more than seventy rai of surrounding land can never be developed — which is why it stays this quiet.
